Saturday, September 12: Scandinavian Family Hike

Come join us for a morning of Friluftsliv – the Scandinavian tradition of enjoying the outdoors and connecting with nature.

While the Norwegians coined the word Friluftsliv (pronounced free-loofts-leev, and literally meaning free-air-life), the idea of embracing outdoor life is deeply rooted across all the Scandinavian countries. Whether it’s a hike, a picnic, or simply spending time outside, Friluftsliv is about slowing down, being present, and enjoying the benefits of nature.

When: Saturday, September 12, 9:30 – 11:00 AM

Where: Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park – meet at the Visitor Center

The Hike: We’ll follow the beautiful River Trail through the redwoods along the San Lorenzo River to Cable Car Beach, taking a leisurely pace with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and socialize. On the way back we’ll take the stairs up to Pipeline Road, providing a short but steeper workout.

Difficulty: Easy-Moderate (appx 2 miles total). Most of the walk is easy and relatively level, but there are some roots and uneven surfaces, as well as a short, steeper section of stairs. Good walking shoes and water are recommended. No hiking experience is necessary.

Optional Fika: Bring a fika or snack to enjoy after the hike. We can sit together at the Day Use Picnic Area, immediately next to the Visitor Center.

Parking: $10 per vehicle, or you may be able to get a FREE California State Parks pass from your local library if you have a library card. Contact your local library branch for details.

We hope you’ll join us for a morning of Friluftsliv, fika, friendship, and the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains!

ALL AGES ARE WELCOME!
