How Youth Can Participate

Procession Participants:

If you know a young person who would like to be an attendant or star boy in the Lucia procession, please contact Veronica at velundqu@gmail.com by Oct 24, 2025.  Include young person’s full name and date of birth.

Participants sing Swedish songs as a group and must attend all Lucia rehearsals in order to participate.  Folk attire is available for the event.

2025 Lucia Selection:

Lucia will be selected at a live drawing at 5 pm on Oct 24, 2025 on zoom.  To have your name in the drawing, you must be 15 yr or older and must have participated in Lucia for 9 years.  Lucia and her family will be introduced at the Jul Dinner.

2025 Rehearsals:

We expect all children ages 5 and up to attend the rehearsals if possible. Of course, we understand if someone has to miss one.

For children under 5, attendance is optional for the first two rehearsals (sometimes it’s just too hard to stand still!). But we’d love for them to join us for:

the third rehearsal, when we hand out Lucia gowns, and
the fourth rehearsal, when we’ll practice the full procession in the church.

Rehearsal Schedule:

  • Sunday, Nov 9 – 3:00 PM at Viking Hall
  • Sunday, Nov 16 – 3:00 PM at Viking Hall
  • Sunday, Nov 30 – 3:00 PM at Viking Hall
  • Sunday, Dec 7 – 3:30 PM at Messiah Lutheran Church

Rehearsal Locations:

Viking Hall, 240 Plymouth St, Santa Cruz

Messiah Lutheran Church, 801 High St, Santa Cruz

Songs:

Below you’ll find the songs we’ll sing in this year’s Lucia procession. They’re the same as last year, except we’ve added the final verse of Nu Tändas Tusen Juleljus.

Since we’ll only have four rehearsals, most of the practice will need to happen at home. You’ll find the song list and lyrics below, along with links to both Spotify and YouTube playlists. If your child has their own phone or tablet, please share the playlists with them and start playing the songs right away. Listening in the car works great!

If your child can read, it’s helpful for them to follow along with the lyrics while listening.

A quick note:
Some of the recordings have more verses than we’ll sing, or small variations in the melody or lyrics. Some are also in a different key or tempo (we’ll usually sing a little lower). I picked these versions because they’re clear, easy to follow, or simply the best ones available.

Thank you for helping us continue this Scandinavian tradition!
